'Torn' Kelvin Gastelum Releases Statement Regarding UFC 234 Main Event Cancellation

Kelvin Gastelum’s middleweight championship dreams will be put on hold after a hernia forced Robert Whittaker to withdraw from their headlining fight at UFC 234.

The news came just hours before Saturday’s event was set to begin from Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. As one might expect, Gastelum was disappointed to miss out on a big opportunity, but he holds out hope that he will still receive a title shot down the road.

“God has a reason for doing things and I firmly believe his plans are much bigger and better than I can even imagine,” Gastelum wrote on Twitter. “I’m so torn about this situation. A lifetime of pursuit to be able to reach this level and I hope none of these efforts will go in vain.

“I wish [Robert Whittaker] a speedy recovery champ! Get well soon!”

Gastelum coached opposite Whittaker on Season 28 of “The Ultimate Fighter.” The 27-year-old Arizona native has lost just once in five Octagon appearances since moving up to middleweight and is coming off back-to-back triumphs over Ronaldo Souza and Michael Bisping.
